Little things make a big difference!

Ok, so you’ve made the decision.  It’s time to re-paint an interior room or two.  The boring blue needs to go, or at least an update is in line.  Sure, it seems like a pretty uncomplicated task, a relaxing Saturday morning breather that allows you an opportunity to wind down from the work week stress.  Selecting the “new” color can be entertaining, and even moving the furniture can be a pleasant experience.  However, the uphill battle is just around the corner…’s time to actually go and purchase your supplies.

Thoughts of HS Algebra class race through your mind, as you try to calculate the total wall area of your room, and how much paint you will need.  (And men, I can promise that you will be judged by the number of extra trips you make to the hardware store to pick up more paint, or extra items.)  I found a wonderful link that that will save you time, energy, and keep you on budget when you need to figure out the amount of paint you need.

Easy 2 DIY offers a fun Interior Paint Calculator.  All you need are the measurements of your rooms and trim around the doors and windows.  The calculator will give you an estimate of how much paint you will need to complete your project.  A little planning will help prevent major headaches!

If the Pitter Patter becomes PAINFUL

I know, the idea of winter finally releasing its stronghold on central Minnesota seems like a scene from the movie Groundhog Day.  In that movie, Bill Murray was hopelessly lost in a repeat of the previous day….day after day after day.  Our latest snowfall tends to remind us of the painful longevity of winter.  However, I can assure everyone that Spring will arrive, and, with its arrival will come the wonderful, relaxing sound of rain drops and their endless pitter patter.

However, as many homeowners know, that sweet little pitter patter can become an expensive, painful home maintenance item.  Water intrusion can rear its ugly head in many forms; many of which can be almost impossible to track.  One of the most costly areas is damage from roof lines; fortunately, the fix can be one of the simpliest on your home.  [Read more…]

When the Honey Do List gets a little sticky

Nature's antisepticCreative Commons License photo credit: Simon Peckham

Come on guys, admit it.  You know the list; it seems to magically grow with activities that are designed to simply interfere with walleye fishing, the back nine, or a relaxing Sunday afternoon nap!  For many of us, the list has turned into a small novel, with chapters of never ending tasks.  Those tasks, if not completed as “expected”, that little Honey-Do list starts to get a little sticky.

It’s probably safe to say that those of us that have mastered the list, have not found the magical genie in the bottle.  What we have found, however, is a much better way to solve the stickiness of the list.

A local handyman service may be the answer.  Rescreening a window, cleaning out gutters, or hanging a new storm door are simple projects that companies like this excel at.  The employees of these organizations are usually very experienced carpenters that have mastered many aspects of their trade.  They understand how things work, and use that knowledge to help “fix” just about anything you need, from the smallest project you can imagine, to much larger endeavors like finishing the basement or a small addition.  These Titans of the Toolbox will make your list much easier to handle!

Bob Schumacher, of Larson Home Solutions is an excellent example of an employee of a successful handyman business.  Bob has owned his owned a remodeling business, and has spent many years in the field.  His knowledge is invaluable to you as a customer, and to our company.

Take advantage of some excellent opportunities to save some money AND get the Honey-Do list complete.

Looking in the rearview mirror……Need help with Spring Fix Up Projects?

I don’t think you will find anyone that will argue with you regarding the strength and longevity of Mother Nature’s impact the last few months.  Homeowners will need to spend a little extra time in the coming weeks to review, and address some issues, or will be potentially facing much greater consequences soon.

An important place to start is with your gutter system.  By many accounts this is the most forgotten item on your house, I mean, it’s just supposed to work, right?  Unfortunately, that gutter and downspout system also takes more abuse than anything else on your home.  By taking a few home maintenance steps right now, you can help prevent greater problems when the spring rains arrive. “Where’s The Beef?”

I am probably dating myself a little bit, but many of you may remember the 1980’s Wendy’s commercial with the short, elderly lady screaming, “Where’s the beef?”  However, today’s window consumers should be saying the same thing!
